How to Make Two Curtain Panels Come Together and Look Expensive

I

am the queen of inexpensive curtains. I have yet to pay more than $300 for curtains in a room. Our windows are long so trust me when I say that's very inexpensive. Despite working on getting my first big girl curtains - which I will report back as to whether they are worth it - I love a good curtain deal. I may love a good curtain hack even more. You can expect a mini-series about curtain hacks here. To kick us off with my mini curtain hack series, we are working on my favourite and easiest ways to make your curtains look expensive: by taking the two panels you bought (because it was cheaper) and turning them into one.

Buying Inexpensive Curtains That Look Expensive

First things first, there are expensive-looking inexpensive curtains and there are just plain inexpensive-looking inexpensive curtains. We want the former. There are two places I’ve had success with this: Amazon, of course, and Ikea. At Ikea, the Ritva Curtain is the way to go. They are a fabulous price. They also look and hang like linen. You can also give them a pinch pleat (hint at the next tutorial) and make the Ikea curtains look even more high-end.
Amazon has amazing curtain options; I have several throughout my home (linking my finds below). I have found with both Amazon and Ikea, you need to buy two panels if you have a large amount of space to cover due to width limitations or sometimes substantial price differences.

Fixing the Width Limitations Of Curtains

For three years we’ve lived with Sloane’s curtains being four panels instead of two – obviously my job is to hide that in photos but here’s her room if you want to see. I never really thought about the fact there is a solution to this problem. Of course, you can sew the panels together which I figured I would do… one day. Out of sheer laziness, I thought there had to be a way to make these two panels look like one and therefore more expensive without sewing. Welcome to my life fabric tape. Let’s always buy two curtain panels all the time and turn them into one without sewing using my new best friend.

Making Two Curtains Look Like One without Sewing

I don’t know if you can handle what you do need to do this:

See, complicated!

Instructions to Make Your Curtains Look More Expensive

1. Take your panels off of the curtain rod and place them on the ground.
2. Stick the fabric tape to the outside edge of one of your curtain panels (nice side out – I like the look of this better)
3. Place the second curtain panel directly overtop of the taped panel – so the nice sides are both facing inward. Line up the outer edges perfectly then squeeze together.
4. Place in the dryer for 15 minutes to let the stick heat up and really stick.
5. Hang your extra expensive looking curtains back up!
