icture this: you've finished furnishing your home. You've thought through every detail and have everything you need in place. You're ready to unwind for the day and go to draw the curtains. Oh shit, you forgot the curtains. Maybe you're light years ahead of me, but curtains were one of the last things I tackled despite how well they can magically pull a room together. It wasn't until recently that I got myself some higher-end curtains (nothing wild), but this Ikea curtain hack got me pretty far - they look quite luxe, especially for the price. It's worth noting that despite the little curtain change I have coming, I would make my Ikea Curtains look high-end again and put them somewhere else in our home. Whether you're simply bougie on a budget or want something that looks higher-end but don't want to pay the premium, I'm here to help you make your Ikea curtains look high-end.
Ikea’s Nices Curtains
My favourite curtains to use when trying to make my Ikea curtains look high-end are the Ritva curtains. They have this perfect texture to them. It gives linen vibes, but for $50 (in Canada at the time of writing this post)/$40 (in the USA at the time of writing this post) for a two-pack, they are most certainly cotton. The white of the Ikea curtain image on the website looks stark white, but in real life, the colour is a softer, creamier white. My only warning to making your Ikea curtains look high-end is not to use the tiebacks. Ok?! Thank you.
You could also double your cost and go for the Dytag curtains which are linen at a great price.
Get Your Ikea Ritva Curtains Looking Custom
My favourite way to get Ikea curtains to look high-end is to add pleats. Now, smaller pleats are what I went with. However, you could do bigger pleats, pinch pleats, or triple pinch pleats. The first thing you need is curtain hooks.The best part is that Ikea sells them. The Ikea Ritva curtains have the heading tape on the back to help you nail this one. If you’re going for a single-fold pleat like mine, insert one side of your curtain hooks into the curtain heading to the left of the back tab and the other to the right. Repeat down the curtain heading.
If you’re doing a double-pinch pleat, do the same thing, except wider; insert the curtain hook on the left, 5 spaces on either side of the back tabs. You then want to fuse the pleats using hemming tape. For a triple pleat, you need a four-pronged curtain hook. This YouTube video I found does a great job of explaining the steps.
Once you’re done, you’re ready to hang!
Don’t Forget Key Details to Make Your Ikea Curtains Look High End
These tips apply to hanging any curtains in your home. Doing them or not can make or break how high-end they look. Whenever possible, you want your rod to extend past your window. Extending it further will give the illusion of a bigger window and make your room feel larger. Next, you want 1.5x or 2x the amount of curtains you need to make it feel more luxe and fuller. I did a mediocre job of both but it’s still better than nothing!
