Deep Cleaning Your Bed 101

Deep Cleaning your bed - a primary bedroom with freshly washed sheets
L

ast year, I had a TikTok video about how I deep cleaned my bed go semi-viral. I was surprised to read the comments of people who didn't know how to do this. If you track the post down, there were comments of people thinking I only wash my bedding once a month. LOL is what I have to say to that. Honestly, I wish I could go that long because I hate making beds. Unfortunately (or fortunately), my love for a nice clean bed outweighs my hatred of making it. While my sheet cleaning is more frequent, my bed deep clean happens every month/two months depending on how much we have on the go. If you're a clean sheets lover like me and can carve out some time in your schedule, I strongly recommend adding deep cleaning your bed into your monthly(ish) routines. It is an almost all-day adventure due to all the laundry; however, nothing is overly complicated.

Step 1 to Deep Cleaning Your Bed: Strip it All

We are going bare bones here friends. Deep cleaning your bed requires a full strip-down of your bed. I’m talking about taking off the duvet cover and removing all of the pillowcases, the sheets, and the mattress pad. That is your laundry for the day. Start with washing the base layer first – the mattress pad. Move onto the sheets next, followed by the duvet cover. I find it easiest to wash the bedding in the same order as how you’d make the bed. Don’t forget your laundry – it is the worst having soaking wet sheets when you want to crawl into bed.

Step 2 to Giving Your Bed A Deep Clean: Baking Soda

Step 2 of the bed deep clean could be going to town on any stains on your mattresses. I would use an upholstery cleaner like my favourite Bissel for any stubborn or unwanted spots. If you don’t have any stains to resolve, you can get right to the baking soda part. Baking soda is so versatile and is fantastic for deep cleaning your mattress. It removes odours, gives it a freshness, and absorbs any wetness (you can bet I deep-cleaned the bed following some serious postpartum night sweats). First, I add my baking soda to a mason jar, then I add a few drops of essential oils I like. Finally, I sprinkle it onto the mattress and let it sit for a few hours. I don’t go wild with this – just a small sprinkling.

Step 3 Vacuuming the Mattress and Bedframe

Don’t you think that vacuuming makes the air immediately feel cleaner?! I sure do which is why I love to vacuum our bed frame using the upholstery attachment during my deep clean. I also vacuum all of the baking soda I sprinkled on my bed. Proceed with caution when vacuuming your baking soda. I’ve heard of people having issues and their vacuums breaking – this has never happened to me but I wanted to flag it just in case.

Step 4 Remake the Bed

I told you, none of this is complicated! Once your baking soda is vacuumed and your bedding is washed and dried, make your bed. While waiting for everything to dry can be challenging, I think the hardest part is waiting for an appropriate time to go to bed so you can crawl into it at night.

Enjoy that sparkly clean bed!
