I think you’re wondering what the heck I am up to this week for Thursday’s three: two truths and a lie. I would be wondering if I were you. I’ve gone this route as I’ve made a few assumptions:

The first being, since we are SO close to Christmas, everyone is product’ed out. Which brings me to some administrative business – unless I have something crazy bananas good to share with you, I’m likely going to take the next two weeks off of Thursday’s three (and blog posts in general) and have a light posting schedule to be able to enjoy the holidays with McGregor and Sloane as well as prepare for 2021!

Second, most people can’t be with their extended families this year (we are included in this “most people” scenario as it’s illegal here). It sucks a lot. As someone working on positivity and gratitude for things we do have, I wanted to reminisce on our traditions and make them into a fun little game for everyone. Therefore, this week’s Thursday’s three is two truths and a lie: Christmas in California edition.

I’m going to go into detail about things we do in California for Christmas each year and as the title “two truths and a lie” alludes to, two of these will be truthful and one won’t be. Your job is to pick out which of these is the lie.

I’ll be releasing the answer on Saturday when I post my last D.I.Y of the year (see, I told you, I’m taking a break – or so I say now!). Yes it’s also coming on a Saturday, not a Sunday – you can find out why on IG later this week.

Two Truths and a Lie: No 2 – My Step-Dad Dislikes Christmas Trees and Will Only Allow a Palm Tree to Be Decorated

My step-dad, affectionately known as my bonus dad, really doesn’t’ get into the Christmas spirit like my mom does. He’s not quite at a scrooge level, but he’s also not spreading holiday cheer. That being said, the one scrooge-y thing he does do is not allow a Christmas tree in the house. Real or fake.

He strongly dislikes Christmas trees and has implemented this rule for the past 10 years.

My mom is allowed all other decorations including mini LED trees with branches – but not a pine Christmas tree or anything that even remotely resembles one. The only other tree he will allow to be decorated is a palm tree. Which ends up being the Christmas tree for the year.

My mom buys a medium-sized palm from Home Depot, uses a beautiful tree collar to go around the pot, gets the lights all wrapped around the trunk and hangs the few decorations we can on it. Truth be told, we’ve only done this a handful of times as after Christmas, we plant the tree in the backyard and they are running out of space back there.

I probably wouldn’t change this one either. Everyone always jokes to us when we say we are going to California for Christmas – “oh are you using a palm tree for your Christmas tree.”

Why yes actually we are.

Two Truths and A Lie: No 1 – My Mom Is The First One Awake on Christmas Morning

Each and every year, my Mom is the first one up on Christmas day. Not at a standard time like most people would think but at 4 in the freaking morning!

Santa Claus is still delivering gifts at that time as far as I’m concerned. But not my Mother. She is always up and raring to go.

To make matters even more fun, she needs to poke her head into everyone’s room and loudly whisper: “are you awake?!”

I am now, Mom, I am now.

She’s been doing this since I was little, so I suppose it’s not specific to a Christmas in California but I do love the early early mornings and the humor it brings – it’s something I never want to change because frankly, when Sloane gets old enough, she will adore that about my Mom, and both of them will be sneaking out at 4 am to see what Santa delivered to their stockings.

Two Truths and a Lie: No 3 – A Very Laker’s Christmas

Christmas Eve in the LA house is when our big dinner happens. My step bonus-siblings are usually with us on Christmas eve and then with their mom for Christmas dinner. So, Christmas eve dinner is when the magic happens!

This also allows for a very relaxing Christmas day – you know, to be woken up at the butt crack of dawn – and even better, it opens up Christmas evening for us to go to Staples Centre and watch the Laker’s game.

Now, if decorating a palm tree for the holidays doesn’t scream LA Christmas, the Lakers game sure does. My bonus-dad and I are consistently the two who go to the game. Sometimes my mom joins, sometimes McGregor joins, sometimes it’s all four of us – it’s a little harder for all four of us to go now that Sloane in the mix.

Our Christmas dinner consists of cheap wine (but actually so expensive), pizza, chicken nuggets, and chopped veggies.

The perk of our Christmas dinner includes the fact that we are usually in the company of Kevin Hart, Shaq, and on occasion Jack Nicholson – he hasn’t been there the past few years on Christmas, though. I mean, we’re not courtside with them, but we are breathing the same air and eating the same food.

That’s it, my two truths and a lie somewhere in there. Which one is it?!

Love this, so fun!! I still definitely think it’s #1 but I need to know if I’m right or not ASAP 😂 The suspense is killing me. Also good for you that you’re taking time off to enjoy the holidays!! We’re doing a very light posting schedule too. It’s so necessary, especially this year.
