DIY Antiqued Christmas Ornaments

I

I hopped on the DIY Christmas ornament train again this year! In 2020, I made some simple DIY Christmas ornaments with greenery. They were great while Sloane was little and unable to understand "please don't touch that; it's breakable." This year, I ordered the Leanne Ford ornaments from Crate and Barrel. A risky move given they aren't shatterproof whatsoever. Another risk was that they wouldn't arrive on time. I ordered them on October 11th with an anticipated delivery date later in the month. As the month drew to an end, the delivery date was constantly pushed out. There was a lot of fear that these beautiful antique Leanne Ford Crate and Barrel ornaments wouldn't arrive on time, but luckily, last weekend (a month and a half later!) they arrived! The downfall, or upfall - if that's even a word, is that while I waited for them to land at home, I did manage to DIY some antiqued Christmas ornaments as a backup. I wasn't sure which method would prove to be the best so I tried four different ways of doing these. You can be the judge of which is your favourite.

My 2020 Ornaments are here if you’re interested, but I promise these are much better.

Items You Need to DIY Antiqued Christmas Ornaments

I stupidly donated all of my ornaments from a few years ago – I absolutely could have reused those for this project. If you are even considering DIYing these this year or next year and currently have ornaments you’re thinking of purging, save them for now. You may just find some use for them! Unlike me who had to buy some inexpensive ornaments to do this DIY.

For all DIY Antiqued Christmas Ornaments You Need:

  • Ornaments – any quantity or size you’d like
  • Paint – any colour or type you want
  • Paintbrush for the paint
  • Ribbon of your choice

Version 1: DIY Plaster Christmas Ornaments

What Else You Need to Make The Plaster Ornaments

  • Joint compound – the amount will depend on how many you’re doing, but I added the tiniest amount to my ornaments (like from the bottom of the barrel – the bucket was already ready to go to the recycling centre – and I could have probably used it on 10 more ornaments)
  • Plastic gloves
  • Rub n Buff
  • Paint brush/sponge for the rub n buff

How to Make The Plaster Ornaments

  1. Using a plastic glove, apply a very thin layer of drywall compound to your holiday ornament
  2. Once dry, paint your ornament any colour you’d like
  3. Once the paint is dry, apply your rub n buff – I did mine with a paintbrush, but I think a sponge would have yielded better results!
  4. Add a pretty ribbon of your choice to hang your ornament
