ome parties are cute, others are fun, and then there are the ones where your six-year-old walks in, gasps dramatically, and shouts at how incredible the decor is! I was so excited when my daughter said she wanted a unicorn ballerina theme for her sixth birthday. Shockingly, it hasn't been done (or rather isn't well documented online), and the magic of unicorns and beautiful ballerinas is perfectly suited for a 6-year-old.
The Unicorn Ballerina Vibe: Sugarplum Fairy Meets Rainbow Sparkle
The Balloon Arch of Any Unicorn Ballerina ‘s Dreams
If I were a unicorn ballerina, this is the balloon arch I would want to greet me as I entered my unicorn den (aka the basement). I bought a rainbow arch balloon kit consisting of pastel coloured rainbow balloons and daisies as well as white balloons for the clouds. I have an automatic balloon inflator, which makes blowing up balloons for a garland a breeze – balloon garland’s are something I make every year for the girls ‘ birthdays.
What completed this balloon arch was the fact that the unicorns were actually wearing tutus. This affordable DIY had me thinking out of the box (after nearly pulling the trigger on actual tutus for a small fortune). I glued tissue paper skirts around the unicorn’s waists, and yes, they looked like they could be stars in Swan Lake. If there’s an award for Best-Dressed Balloon, we nailed it.It was so easy and done by ripping the tissue paper into 1/4’s and using this cordless glue gun.
Snacks Fit for The Unicorn Ballerina
I had way too much fun with the food – mostly because my almost 6-year-old loves a pretty snack board as much as I do:
- Rainbow Charcuterie: Colourful fruit, veggies, and cheeses arranged in a soft arc. Grapes, strawberries, cheddar, kiwi, carrots—it was almost too pretty to eat. Almost.
- Ballerina & Unicorn Cupcake Tiered: Some had tiny fondant ballet slippers, others had golden horns and pastel swirls of frosting. Not something I made – something I wish I could make though.
- Meat & Cheese Board: Classic and a must at any party.
- Treat Board: My mother-in-law makes sugar cookies for my daughter’s party every year and this year I also found a unicorn snack mix at Costco as well as “cotton candy” flowers at the supermarket.
Rainbow Ballerina Garland
Streamer garlands stretched across the ceiling and fell all the way to the floor, creating a magical rainbow that made the entire room feel like we were inside a ballerina’s dream. You can follow my friend’s tutorial here. Or just make this shape using painters tape, creating a loop (so it’s sticky on two sides) per streamer.
Your little one’s birthday can be just as magical. Think about 1-3 spaces you want to deck out in sweet decor. You want to plan our your colours, and items that align with your theme.. Check what’s available to buy and think about how they would use their imagination to make the party special – I know my little ones have the most creative ideas and push me in an amazing direction.
Happy dancing little unicorn ballerina’s.
